Abstract

Objective: This study provides an overview of the transition process of academic journals at the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (UANL) toward the diamond open access model, emphasizing challenges, institutional objectives, implemented strategies, and future perspectives in scholarly communication. Methodology: A descriptive and exploratory analysis was conducted on the development of the UANL Journals Project, considering its historical evolution from the adoption of the Open Journal Systems platform in 2017 to its current consolidation, as well as reviewing transformations in publishing models, particularly the migration from print to digital formats. Results: The results reveal the progressive consolidation of the institutional editorial ecosystem, with the incorporation of more than 50 publications into the project, the adoption of digital platforms for editorial management, and the strengthening of scientific and outreach journals. However, persistent challenges are identified, particularly regarding the consolidation of born-digital publications and the sustainability of the diamond open access model. Conclusions: The transition to diamond open access at UANL represents a significant advancement in the democratization of scientific knowledge. Nevertheless, structural challenges remain, requiring continuous institutional strategies to ensure the quality, sustainability, and strengthening of the university editorial system within the context of contemporary scholarly communication.
