About the Journal

Objective and Scope

Ciência da Informação Express (CIExpress), ISSN: 2675-8717, is an open-access channel for communication and scientific dissemination dedicated to publishing research articles, opinion pieces, communications, reviews, abstracts, press releases, essays, and other works related to Librarianship, Documentation, Archival Science, Information Science, Information Technology, and Open Science practices. It adopts a continuous publication system (rolling pass). In this format, publication occurs as articles are approved.

The purpose of creating CIExpress is to provide a dynamic and rapid dissemination of concepts, practices, theories, or critiques in these fields so that the academic universe of Information Science becomes more closely connected to undergraduate students, professionals, researchers, and society at large, enabling the creation of new values and meanings in the area. This initiative is considered important because the ways of communicating and disseminating science have been undergoing transformation. An example of this is the use of social media and instant messaging applications. Short texts that require little reading time can attract more reader interest, giving greater visibility to research and innovation results, which are usually available in formal channels such as books and theses.

CIExpress is in an initial stage, implementing its structure, and relies on the collaboration of researchers interested in rapidly, objectively, and continuously disseminating research or scientific developments. A strong point of CIExpress is its way of interacting with the public through social media. Below are details of its structure:

Layout – Activities began using the Wix platform, an online site creation and editing platform in HyperText Markup Language (HTML). However, as implementation progressed, the need for migration to a platform more suited to the scientific management of texts was identified, encompassing all stages from submission and peer review to final publication. Thus, the Open Journal Systems (OJS) was selected to manage CIExpress, and since 2022, the platform has been under preparation, migrating texts previously published on the former platform.

Content – The initial proposal was to divide content into three sections: the first, Stay Informed, dedicated to presenting concepts under construction in the general context of the field and its scope of activity; the second, Personalities, aimed at presenting biographical or autobiographical profiles of authors, researchers, or renowned authorities in the areas covered by the channel; the third, Science 1.1, intended to provide content in the format of pitches, videos, podcasts, or video articles on topics in the field. Texts are either invited contributions or organically received via submissions through OJS.

Author Guidelines – In summary, these establish the focus and scope of CIExpress, its periodicity, the absence of publication fees, the statement of responsibility, the privacy statement required by Brazilian personal data protection law, text presentation formats, submission guidelines, digital preservation, recommendations for sharing in scientific social networks, and clarifications regarding dissemination in generic and scientific digital media.

Team – Composed of collaborators from various institutions, in addition to an editorial board with a consultative role on topics of interest to CIExpress, among other functions. This ensures the maintenance and sustainability of the journal.

Communication Strategy – As a form of dissemination, teasers of texts are made available on the journal’s social media profiles: Twitter, chosen for its strong presence of scientists, @ci_express; Facebook, as the most popular platform in the country, @cienciadainformacaoexpress; Instagram, for its high visibility of videos and images, @cienciadainformacaoexpress. To expand dissemination, authors are encouraged to share their works on general and scientific social networks, such as:

Due to its innovative dissemination model, the journal was presented at the 12th Luso-Brazilian Conference on Open Science and was a finalist in the Premio Latinoamericano a la Innovación en Educación Superior, presented at the Encuentro Latinoamericano a la Innovación en Educación Superior, both in 2021, in Colombia.

This channel is also considered by its creator as part of a set of factors that motivated the development of a research project aimed at observing Open Science and the scientific communication system, seeking evidence to diagnose the adherence of Brazilian federal public universities—the country’s leading producers of scientific research—to Open Science. It is a subproduct of the doctoral thesis entitled: Open Science in Brazilian Federal Public Universities: Policies, Actions, and Initiatives, defended on November 18, 2022, in the Graduate Program in Knowledge Management and Organization at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (PPGGOC/UFMG), conducted by Nivaldo Calixto Ribeiro under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Dalgiza Andrade Oliveira.

On March 20, 2023, through Order No. 2 of the Director of Editora UFLA, SEI Document 0035172, process 23090.006210/2023-40, CIExpress was institutionalized as an official publication of the Federal University of Lavras (UFLA).
